The Chalga Band is the most exclusive ensemble consisting of talented gipsy and Bulgarian musicians, already known in the Italian scene for their accompaniment for the singer Sissi Atanassova.
The name derives from the “Chalga”, a kind of rhythmic and melodic connection between the Balkan traditional sonorities and the music improvisation by the gipsy whom have crossed for centuries the geographical and cultural area of south-west Europe.
At Sensible Records, the label producing world music at Ishtar greenhouse, The Chalga Band is the ensemble performing in Ratka Piratka, a compilation of covers of the most electric songs taken from the East Europe music repertoires. An artistic heritage previously unknown in Italy.
Among the various instruments played by the band we find the clarinet, the accordion, the gadulka (traditional chord instrument, similar to the Greek bozouki) and the darabuka (a kind of percussion coming from the Balkan and middle eastern area).
In the chalga these tradional elements are mixed with electric instruments, the drums (accompaniment) and the percussions (rhythmic embellishment).
