Cristina Zavalloni

Singer and composer, Cristina Zavalloni was born in Bologna in 1973. She obtained the school-leaving certificate at liceo scientifico. Straight afterwards she decides to devote herself professionally to music, she begins to study singing and classical composition togheter with contemporary dance. In '90 she approaches jazz, taking part in some summer workshops of "Siena Jazz" and "Umbria Jazz". In '93 she partecipates in a training course held by European Union, joining the "O.F.P. ORCHESTRA" both as an arranger-composer and as a singer. In'94 she begins studing lyrical chant. After 6 years she meets M° Michelangelo Curti, with whom she specializes. In Bologna at Conservatorio G.B. Martini, under M° Carluccio guidance, she studies classical composition until 1999. In '94 she is a former member of "Open Quartet" with whom she produces 2 CDs: “Danse � Rebours ”- for the german label Y.V.P. - and “ Come valersi non servilmente di Bertolt Brecht ”- CMC -. In '97 french tuba player Michel Godard joins the quartet. With this line-up she often performs out of Italy: Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Norway, Romania and England. In september '97 she performs the role of Lucilla in Rossini's "La Scala di Seta" at Teatro Comunale of Bologna. In november '97 she is involved, togheter with "E.C.O. ENSEMBLE", in Arnold Schönberg's " Pierrot Lunaire " at Teatro Verdi of Pisa. They perform this work in Livorno (july '98), Bologna (april 2000), Massa Carrara (july 2000), Termoli (May 2001). In may '98 she has the role of Justine-Juliette, main character of " La Passion selon Sade " written by Italian composer Sylvano Bussotti . This pièce is performed in Alessandria, Napoli, Torino, Bologna, Bergamo, Reggio Emilia and Den Haag (Holland). In sept '98 made his debut with the half-italian half-french ensemble “ Assemblage ” born from italian AMJ and french AFIJMA. In feb '99 inaugurates METASTASIO JAZZ ‘99 festival with an original production commissioned by Fondazione Metastasio di Prato carried out togheter with Francesco Cusa and the “ Impasse ” group: a postrecording of the famous '27 movie “Aurora” of Murnau. She is both composer and performer. The music written for the movie is published on a cd: “New Original Soundtrack for AURORA ” (BassesfeREC, 2000), presented in Ravenna and Bologna in october 2000 during the festival JAZZ CROSSING, with ANDY SHEPPARD playing sax as a guest. In april of the same year she starts working with the famous dutch composer Louis Andriessen with a brand new track called “ Passeggiata in tram per l’America e ritorno ” played by the Concertgebouw Big Band directed by Juriel Hempel. In may she's in London to perform it again with the London Sinfonietta directed by Diego Masson. In august she's taking part in RUMORI MEDITERRANEI (Roccella Jonica) festival with the ensemble "Assemblage ”. In sept '99 she performs at S.Leonardo (RIMINI) abbey a concert for voice and string quartet with first performances by F.Carluccio, C.Landuzzi, M.Balza. In autumn '99 she performs “ Sequenza III per voce sola ” in Genoa during a festival dedicated to Luciano Berio. In nov '99 she's in Norway for a show with “ Open Quartet “ at Bergen Jazz Forum. In december she performs the role of the main character in “ Pierrot Lunaire ” during DISSONANZEN Festival in Naples: it's a new production under the direction of dramatist Alessandra Petitti and Claudio Lugo for the music. In this experiment she sing and dance the role of Pierrot. In the same period she's working again with Louis Andriessen performing a composition called “M is Man, Muisc, Mozart ” at Barbican Centre in London with the BBC Symphony Orchestra directed by Martyn Brabbins. In may 2000 she presents at BIMHUIS in Amsterdam the new cd “ Scoiattoli Confusi ” (BassesfeREC), realized in duo with pianist Stefano De Bonis. In september 2000 she performs with E.C.O. ENSEMBLE at Biennale di Venezia with music by Oehring, Boccadoro, Carluccio. In october 2000 she's at the NUOVA CONSONANZA festival in Rome with a concert at Teatro Olimpico with percussion ensemble Ars Ludi. In dec 2000 she's performing again the “Canzoniere” by Carlo Boccadoro at Piccolo Regio di Torino , with the ensemble Sentieri Selvaggi. In Jan 2001 she's touring Holland with the “Open Quartet ” and Roy Paci (trumpet) and Yves Robert (trombone). In march 2001 she's at Teatro La Scala of Milano performing music by Andriessen e Mac Millan with the ensemble Sentieri Selvaggi . The concert will be performed at the Biennale di Venezia in may 2001. In the same month she works with the ensemble Dolmen Orchestra and the sicilian group Zephir Ensemble directed by Francesco La Licata. In june-july 2001 she's in Barcelona where she plays the main role in the opera “ EURIDICE ” from catalan composer Juan Alberto Amargos (production Teatre Grec - Barcellona). In july she's touring Australia toghether with dutch ensemble ORKEST DE VOLHARDING with a program made of music by Louis Andriessen. In sept 2001 she's working in the production of opera CAMERA OBSCURA -written by composer Marco Di Bari- commissioned by Settore Musica of Biennale di Venezia. The opera will be co-produced by Teatro Lirico di Trieste. In november 2001 she opens the season of Piccolo Regio in Torino with the ’ “ Impressive Ensemble ” of Claudio Lugo, presenting a new work entitled “ Leyendo Jodo ” inspired to poet and movie director Alejandro Jodorowsky. From feb 2002 she's touring europe with ensemble ORKEST DE VOLHARDING in which she's solo singer. They travel in Holland, Spain and England. In march 2002 she's again in duo with Stefano De Bonis in Modena for Europe Jazz Network . She's often involved in other musicians' project, as in the case of Roy Paci and fabio Barovero's “ Banda Ionica ". The cd of this project is presented in aprikl 2002 at Teatro Regio in Turin. In the same month she's in USA, where she takes part in the first performance of opera da camera « The Second Bakery Attack » by american composer Yotam Haber ( Festival Chamber Orchestra, University of Cornell – Ithaca, New York, USA). In may 2002 she's performing at Festival Angelica (Bologna), taking part to the original production « Galleria San Francesco » under the direction dutch cellist-composer Tristan Honsinger. In june she's singing at Festa della Musica (Milano) with the production « Chat-opera », commissioned tol roman composer Francesco Antonioni . In september she's at Bimhuis in Amsterdam for the event “ Meeting Improvisers ” . In october 2002 she makes her debut in the new Louis Andriessen “ PASSIONE ” written for solo singer(C.Zavalloni), violin solo (Monica Germino) and orchestra. This job, commissioned by London Sinfonietta, is performed at Queen Elisabeth Hall (QEH, South Bank – Londra) by the ensemble directed by Oliver Knussen . This piéce is performed in Berlin (oct 2002) at Berliner Festwochen with the ensemblre Musik Fabrik directed by Stefan Asbury. ).
